Cocaine with a street value of $71.6 million dollars was seized at Gordon Quay, Port Bustamante in Kingston yesterday.
According to the police, about 2:18 am, security personnel observed a suspicious object attached to the hull of one of the ships, which arrived on the island on Friday from Valencia, Spain. The Jamaica Customs Contraband Enforcement Team were summoned and the object was discovered to be a metal canister. Subsequent checks revealed that 58 rectangular parcels of cocaine were concealed in the canister.
The police report stated that “No arrest has been made in connection with the seizure. However, detectives have intensified their probe into the matter.”
The combined effort of the Marine Police Division and the Jamaica Customs Contraband Enforcement Team (CET) resulted in the seizure of the vessel containing the drugs.
The cocaine weighed 75.35 kilograms and have an estimated street value of $71.63 million or US$551,000, according to the police.
